John Barker

John Paine Barker John Paine Barker died on July 16, 2016, at the Pinnacle Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, in Price, Utah, after a lengthy illness. He was born on March 14, 1939 in Torrington, Connecticut, to John Hodges Barker and Myrtle Paine Barker, and he grew up in Watertown, Connecticut. He was the oldest of three siblings. John was a largely self-educated man, widely read, and with a strong interest in history and science. He was a machinist by trade. John's greatest gift was the ability to engage with anyone around him, regardless of where he was or who they were. He easily formed close friendships wherever he went in his life. John joined the United States Air Force in 1956, serving for four years. Prior to moving to Huntington, Utah, John had lived for many years on Whidbey Island near Seattle, Washington. For the last few years prior to his move to Huntington he had lived on a sailboat in Oak Harbor. He was a member of the Oak Harbor Yacht Club and worked with the youth sailing group. Asked why he moved to Huntington, he stated that he was interested in studying the petroglyphs in the area. John was a ham radio operator, reactivating his father's call sign, K1HOD. In Huntington he was a member of the Sinbad Desert Amateur Radio Club of Carbon and Emery Counties. John was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by two brothers, Thomas A. Barker-Detwiler and Robert W. Barker, by his children John H. Barker and Peter M. Barker, and by his children Loxie A. Schulle and Kenneth A. Schulle, and by a grandchild, Dylan C. Barker. A memorial service will be held at a time and date to be determined at the chapel at Huntington Second Ward, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, located at 240 North Main Street, Huntington, Utah. The family wishes to give special thanks for the kindness and assistance provided by John's friends and the church in Huntington, and also for care provided by the staff of the ICU at Castleview Hospital in Price, Utah, and the hospice nursing staff of the Community Nursing Services, also in Price.
